Students at Wickaninnish Community School are learning their Nuu-chah-nulth numbers by playing a game. First Nations Support Worker Grace George teaches the students the numbers from 1-10 then has students demonstrate their understanding in a "Slap It! " game. Divided into teams students compete to tap the correct number first. The game has additional rules and ways to earn double points and can be adapted for other grades and other vocabulary. Extremely popular with the students.
Berries is an integrated science unit which incorporates concepts from traditional Nuu-chah-nulth knowledge, Physical Education, Outdoor Education and Social Studies. Presented through PowerPoint, the Berries Unit is easily accessible for home learning and in the classroom setting. For students working at home there is audio for every slide and multiple instructional videos, and links to worksheets. Go to our resource page to download this unit and others.
The Indigenous Education Team and the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council have produced a timeline poster about the Alberni Indian Residential School. Go to our resource page to order this poster and more.
